High-pressure or subduction metamorphism
Rocks in subduction zones are metamorphosed under conditions of high pressure at relatively low temperature, hence the terms high-pressure (prop- erly high-pressure/low-temperature) metamor- phism or subduction metamorphism; Fig. 7.24).
Therefore, the rocks and minerals within the subducted plate experience the extreme conditions of subduction metamorphism - rapid deep burial causes high pressure with relatively low tempera- tures (Fig. 7.24).
Under conditions of subduction metamorphism, the water-containing minerals become unstable and are replaced.
The high-pressure belt (subduction metamorphism) marks the area of Japan (Miyashiro, 1973).
